MSNBC did a nice “Breaking News” piece on me with David Schuster interviewing my fellow pundits, “Republican strategist” Todd Boulanger and “Democratic strategist” David Goodfriend about my difficult decision to come clean as the source of the Africa story. MSNBC tried to reach me today for an on-camera interview as well, but I was traveling between DC and New York when the story aired. I certainly have my issues with NBC, and even Keith Olbermann’s used me as a source on several occasions, so at least it was nice that this time they gave me full attribution.
Of course, as soon as their story ran, all hell apparently broke loose on the blogosphere, as you can probably tell by the vitriolic comments posted on the blog. My associate, Danny, has been trying to moderate the comments all day, but as you can see, many of the most vile ones snuck through anyway.
Danny tells me that one ongoing thread he’s seen on many of the blogs today is that I somehow don’t exist or am a fraud of some kind. As any loyal reader of the blog or of our new YouTube channel knows full well, every single one of these fallacious internet rumors can be attributed to a single source - a Mr. “Wolfrum,” whom we established is a very bitter tranny-loving golf blogger living in Brazil when we wrote about him back in June. When the BBC recently ran their YouTube series on me entitled “The Last Republican,” I even addressed the issue there. As you may have seen from my responses to this documentary, I’m quite upset at the way I was portrayed in the series, but in this one particular episode, at least I am asked, and I think I answer, the question directly. (please, though, I urge you to skip ahead to minute 1:50 where I address the issue head on - the rest of this episode takes much of what I say out of context)
For all of you naysayers out there, I ask you now not to believe everything you read on the internet. My reputation is at risk, and every single blog that has cast doubt on my existence has been traced back to this one, unrepentant golf blogger who has some sort of pathological grudge against me. And for those wondering why he would go after me, and try to discredit my views on Sarah Palin, you should take note that he himself comes from Alaska. Coincidence? Or just plain chance?
And I’ve posted it before, but I think it’s relevant here again, this is yet another specific case wherein I address my detractors in one of my video responses to the “The Last Republican”:
Finally, for anyone using inexact technology like Google, perhaps one reason you keep seeing the word “hoax” next to my name is because I have used this very blog to uncover several hoaxes, including the case of the photo-shopped Iranian missile picture, in which I was the first American to notice that the picture was a hoax. I urge people not to be gullible with the internet, and realize that you can’t trust the first couple lines of a Google search for all the answers.

By now you’ve all heard the Fox News report last week that “unnamed” former McCain advisers leaked that Sarah Palin was confused about whether Africa was a continent, and which countries were in NAFTA. I was perfectly happy staying under the radar as an anonymous source for Fox News‘ Carl Cameron, but now that Palin has accused her accusers of being “unprofessional…jerks…cowards… taking things out of context, and then tried to spread something on national news” and begun to cast doubt on the Fox News report, maybe she’s right to a certain extent. For those of us on the McCain campaign who thought that she acted like a rogue diva and lost John the election, maybe we DO have a responsibility to come out in public. But Sarah… careful what you ask for: some of us may have more to reveal.
So yes, to be clear, last week I was the one who leaked those things to a producer at Fox News who works with Cameron. Carl and his producers are good guys, and I don’t want them to have to worry about protecting their sources (and going through the wringer ala Judith Miller or Matt Cooper) on something like this.
As you know, I was one of the foreign policy advisers on the McCain campaign who worked with Randy Scheunemann to help prep Sarah on her debate with Joe Biden. Did we outright give her a geography quiz when we started the prep? No, of course not. But yes, in the context of the prep, it slowly became apparent that her grasp of basic geo-political knowledge had major gaps. Could she have passed a multiple choice test about South Africa or NAFTA. Probably. But it was clear that she simply didn’t have the ease of knowledge that we come to expect from a major party political candidate. Other slights came up, too: Not knowing the difference between Hezbollah and Hamas. Or the difference between the Shiites and Suni. Or when it came to international terrorist organizations, knowing that the IRA was in Northern Ireland, and ETA in Spain.
The real thing we had to constantly remind her was to never, ever compare herself in any way to Hillary Clinton, as she had at her announcement speech. We had it on good authority that Biden was prepping to unleash the inevitable line, “I know Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton is a friend of mine. And Sarah, you’re no Hillary Clinton.” Alas, Biden would have been right.

Maybe you should point the finger at the campaign advisers for the loss. Seems as though Sarah Palin has the fortitude to expose the outdated and lackluster advice by McCain’s advisers and to say that she was not aware Africa was a continent only shows your sophomoric attempt to dispell the inept advice you and your fellow advisers provided. I was a strong supporter of John McCain but you can tell that his campaign only attempted to sustain and not innovate his followers and win fellow supporters. I should certainly hope that we DO have a level of ELITISM in our politicians. What I mean by that is BY WHATEVER SCALE you choose to measure them, they do well. In the case of Palin, and putting policies differences aside, it was clear that she simply didn’t have a base level of knowledge necessary to be vice president, let alone president. Frankly, this goes to the HEART of the judgement of the mccain campaign and whomever made the decision to bring her in. That was a fail. So the source is a former Giuliani supporter, which means a socially liberal, pro-choice, fiscally conservative neo-con who would naturally think of Palin as a disaster because of her evangelical Christian worldview.

I also find interesting the “Never compare yourself again with Hillary” quote. You that one ready? It suggests that you yourself think Hillary is an acceptable candidate for president?
I wish Biden had made that remark. Hillary would be an unknown lawyer. Without Bill’s fame and Rudy’s cancer, she never could have become a Senator from New York. Sarah Palin is a political phenomenon in her own right - without the aide of inherited fame.
There is something about the “geography quiz” that didn’t ring true. I am glad you clarified that it was missteps and mistakes she made in debate practice. Of course, it’s been taken out of context and for years to come she’ll be known for “not knowing Afica is a continent.”

I think that’s unfair - Palin didn’t lose John the election, John lost John the election for picking Palin in the first place. It was this cynical and reckless maneuver that showed such disdain towards the American people and turned so many away.

First, thank you for admitting that you were the source. I give you credit for that and for your career. Second, for the record, I don’t believe Palin is qualified to be VP. But:
(1) You suggest that “it slowly became apparent” that Palin had gaps in geopolitical knowledge. Why was this a shock and why did you realize it slowly? She’s the governor of Alaska, 44 years old, with no foreign policy experience. Isn’t that what the vetting process is for? Aren’t you supposed to vet her to help you discover her knowledge and decide if it’s at a level you can accept?
(2) I notice you did not clearly reiterate you comments to Fox that she didn’t know the countries in NAFTA and that Africa is a continent. This is an interesting omission in your blog. It seems that, if, as you said, she could pass a test about NAFTA or Africa, then certainly your earlier Fox comments must have been false. If not, why not say them clearly here under your own name?
(3) Sarah Palin was chosen by your staff and Senator McCain. As Campbell Brown said, she is who she is and she didn’t suddenly change. I suggest better vetting work in the future, but if I were a future campaign manager I’m not sure I’d trust former McCain advisors with information - who knows where it might be leaked in the future as people try to save their backsides.

McCain was suppose to be the foreign policy expert, not Sarah Palin (she could’ve taught him a thing or two about energy). And, as I recall, John McCain chose her, so by extension you are telling us that McCain chose someone who was weakly vetted by his, ahem, “top notch” team and as a result was under-prepared to serve him on the ticket.

Glad to hear about Sarah Palin being outed. I think it’s relevant that the American people know that someone who could have been the President of this country didn’t know that Africa was not a country. John McCain lost the election. His selection of Gov. Palin provided a brief moment of revival of his failing campaign. Even the excitement she provided could not save McCain. It was obvious that Palin was working harder than McCain… tougher than McCain.
John McCain did not want to win badly enough. He pulled his punches from day one. Mr. Nice Guy can now go home and be the senator from Arizona where he belongs.

Thank you for speaking the truth. McCain lost the election partly because he toyed with America’s future by allowing this train wreck of a VP candidate. With his age and health history, that ignorant woman could have become our president.
She is worse than just ignorant of the world. She has serious ethics issues. Mother Jones was investigating how her house was built by the same company she awarded the sports complex contract to. Troopergate was decided by a bi-partisan committee that was heavily Republican (something like 10 to 3) and yet she had to get an appointed small group to override their decision that she had abused her power. And anyone investigating that would see clearly what she did as a personal vendetta.
Please - some journalists more respected than National Enquirer keep on the Wasilla doctor that is in Palin’s pocket (she was given an award based on Sarah’s letter) so we might finally prove that Trig is in fact Bristol’s son, Downs presents in young mothers too (although Fetal Alcohol Syndrome cannot be ignored, with photo proof of Bristol drinking).
Bristol was taken out of school for 5 months for “mono” at the time when she could have been pregnant. Sarah suddenly announces she herself is pregnant at SEVEN MONTHS. Her staff is on record (google this) for saying you don’t look pregnant this time.
It matters because she lied, she hid her daughter’s first pregnancy, and it shows what a terrible role model she is for her policies of “pro-life’, forced pregnancies and forced teen marriages.
